Genesee Precision, Inc.Genesee Precision, Inc. is a manufacturer of custom injection molds and molded products. GPI provides full comprehensive services for diverse manufacturers in order to meet or exceed their requirements and contribute to their success.
GPI was founded in 1993 to provide a single source for engineered plastic components to a wide range of industries. The company vision has always been to provide customers with a committed partner who could take their ideas from concept to product realization. Situation: Off shore competition and the impact of the recent economic slowdown have put increasing pressure on all Genesee Precision’s sales and profitability. GPI recognized that implementing a formal Quality Management System based on the ISO 9001-2000 standard would improve the company’s competitive position by enhancing product quality, increasing efficiency and controlling costs. In addition, ISO certification could be used as a marketing tool to attract new customers. Solution:
In mid-2003, GPI contracted with High Tech Rochester to assist the company with their ISO 9001 implementation effort. A subsequent downturn in sales forced the company to reassess its priorities. GPI management felt that ISO certification was critical to GPI's future success and continued to support the initiative at a reduced pace but without interruption. In January 2005, BVQi, an internationally-known Registrar, audited the company. After four days in intense auditing, BVQi found only one minor non-conformance, which was quickly resolved with the help of the HTR representative. As of February 4, 2005, Genesee Precision is ISO 9001-2000 Registered.
Result: As a result of the implementation effort and ISO’s emphasis on performance measurement, GPI has experienced the following quantifiable outcomes from the efforts made towards ISO certification: - On-time delivery rate has improved in both mold manufacturing and molding. 1st quarter results show 9% improvement over 2004 averages in both departments.
- Customer returns and associated costs have been reduced. 1st quarter costs are below 1/4% for returns in mold manufacturing and zero returns have been mad ein molding.
- Scrap quantities are lower as continuous improvements are made, allowing for more competitive quoting. Molding has experienced average savings of approximately $2500 per month in 2005.
- Fewer errors are being made as a result of the improved documentation and adherence to procedures. GIP has documented 8 incidents during the 1st quarter versus 36 incidents in the 4th quarter of 2004.
- Employees have a better understanding of business objectives and are more receptive to teamwork concepts.
- Company strategy and goals are being communicated to all employees and individual goals are being set to support the overall effort.
- Departments are working together toward a common goal rather than competing with each other. The efforts involved in becoming ISO compliant unified the representatives of various departments in the creation of procedures, work instructions, auditing events, etc.
- Lengthy quality surveys are no longer required by the majority of prospective customers. Copies of certificates along with minimal company history satisfy their requirements.
- Most companies with certified quality management systems require their vendors to have recognized, similar quality systems. GPI's sales force can now target these potential accounts.
- There is an increased feeling of accomplishment and pride throughout the organization. 95% of the employees on all three shifts attended the celebration that was held in recognition of the certification.
