About Pre-Seed
This highly interactive workshop provides inventors, entrepreneurs, and technology professionals with resources for quickly assessing their specific market opportunities and identifying the next steps to be taken in creating a start-up business around their technology innovation. This is not a lecture series!
Over 100 new companies have been formed in New York State and secured over $50 million in the past five years as a result of participating in a Pre-Seed Workshop.
See how Idea Teams are structured
Teams consisting of: regional technology experts, business and intellectual property attorneys, financial specialists, market researchers, and seasoned entrepreneurs are formed around each inventor or “idea champion” in a structured two-day program.
Individual experts for each team are uniquely selected by HTR staff members based on the specific technologies accepted into the workshop.
Outcomes of the workshop include a concise business case and presentation along with specific actions for the next steps to be taken toward commercialization. Many prior pre-seed attendees have formed business relationships with the experts they met in their teams. Presentations created by these teams have formed the basis for some groups to secure seed-stage funding shortly after the workshop.
The Pre-Seed Workshop is a two and a half day “build-a-company” event which rallies community talent and resources to investigate and transform potentially commercializable technologies (developed primarily at universities, corporations, and major research centers) into pre-seed stage companies. The PSW occurs about eight times a year in various Host City locations throughout New York State.
The Consortium. PSW-NY is the consortium behind the PSW. With 77+ major participating organizations, it is one of the largest grass-roots initiatives in New York State facilitating the growth of entrepreneurship and the creation of start-up companies. Over the last six years, PSW-NY has mobilized and tapped into the intellectual capital and expertise of Universities, Business Schools, Economic Development Agencies, Venture Capital Groups, Law Firms, State Agencies, Accounting Firms, Banks, and Cluster Organizations across the state. As of June 2010, 34 Pre-Seed Workshops have been held in 8 host cities with 1283 Participants in which 203 “hi-tech ideas” were analyzed by over 203 teams to create or strengthen 112 high-tech companies. Host Cities include Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Albany, Ithaca, Geneva, NYC and Long Island.
